World-renowned sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Lawrence Lemak (Larry Lemak) is a leader in sports medicine and arthroscopy research.
Dr. Lawrence Lemak is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School and completed his orthopaedic residency at University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Lawrence Lemak was a founder and board member of the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI). He was also a founding partner of Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, which was founded in 1986 and became one of the nation's leading orthopaedic clinics until 2007, when the center was dissolved.
Dr. Lawrence Lemak’s skills, talent, and experience then led him to Brookwood Medical Center before Lemak Sports Medicine joined Trinity Medical Center in 2010.
Dr. Lawrence Lemak revolutionized sports safety and prevention both on and off the field by helping standardize treatment for professional and college athletes, educating coaches and researching injuries.
Lemak continues his commitment to sports safety and prevention. Also practicing in Lemak Sports Medicine are his son Dr. David Lemak, Dr. Michael Patterson, and former fellow, Dr. Robert Agee (Bobby Agee), and three fellows, who are in specialty training.
Lemak's future plans include building a comprehensive regional center for the
care of athletes and others who have similar injuries or problems as
athletes. And The SMART Institute—an acronym for Sports Medicine and Athletic Related Trauma. The SMART program will be a collaboration with other sub specialists providing preventive education and treatment of injuries for athletes. The program will reach high school athletes and their coaches who may not have the same access to information and services as college and professional athletes.
American Sports Medicine Institute and the Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center developed an internationally recognized fellowship program. More than 100 physicians and surgeons have studied under the leadership of Dr. Lawrence Lemak and his practice. Dr. Lawrence Lemak and his son, Dr. David Lemak remain as team physicians for 18 high schools, Samford University, Miles College, Alabama State University and the University of South Florida. And Dr. Lawrence Lemak continues as the medical director for several professional sports.
As a leader in the field of arthroscopy, Dr. Lawrence Lemak has published articles in numerous medical journals and has given presentations in the United States, England, Europe, Japan and South America. He is a Faculty Member of the Minimally Invasive Surgery and Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery Symposium.
Dr. Lawrence Lemak's professional affiliations include the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine among others. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of Virginia.
Dr. Lawrence Lemak's excellent surgical skills, administrative and business abilities combined with his commitment to the community and civic duties make him an asset to the medical field and to the state of Alabama.
Dr. Lemak and his wife have three sons and six grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys snow skiing, snorkeling and scuba diving.
