Dr. William H. Burkhalter III

Dr. Will Burkhalter is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and specializes in Primary Care and Sports Medicine Orthopedics. He joined Lemak Sports Medicine & Orthopedics in August 2010 and currently practices at our Trussville and Birmingham locations. He is instrumental in providing non-surgical musculoskeletal care to athletes at every level of competition as well as non-athlete patients. Additionally, Dr. Burkhalter serves as the first line of primary care for back/spine patients at our Birmingham location with Dr. Stan Faulkner.

Prior to joining Lemak Sports Medicine & Orthopedics, Dr. Burkhalter completed a Sports Medicine fellowship and worked as a team physician for The University of South Alabama and Daphne High School. In 2010, Dr. Burkhalter was the Co-Medical Director for the Mobile First Light Marathon and a member of the medical staff for the Azalea Trail Run. 

Dr. Burkhalter received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Furman University, cum laude and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Burkhalter received his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC and completed his residency in Family Medicine at The University of South Alabama in 2008. He completed his fellowship at The University of South Alabama Department of Family Medicine, and Baldwin Bone and Joint, P.C. in 2010 and received his CAQ in Primary Care Sports Medicine. Dr. Burkhalter has participated in osteoarthritis screenings - a free service to the community. Currently, he covers various high schools in greater Birmingham including Clay-Chalkville High School as well as high schools in Blount County. He has worked in sports medicine at Miles College, Jacksonville State University, and Concordia College.

He also helps provide medical coverage to Ashville High School, J.B. Pennington High School, Moody High School, Pell City High School and Jacksonville State University.

Dr. Burkhalter’s professional memberships include the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians, the Alabama Academy of Family Physicians, the Trussville Chamber of Commerce and the Trussville Rotary Club. Dr. Burkhalter received his licensure from the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners and the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Burkhalter’s areas of interest include injection of orthobiologics and PRP, and hip injuries.
