GARDENDALE, Ala (WIAT) - Injuries are a part of playing sports. But some injuries are definitely worse than others and a new Alabama state law is trying to keep at least on injury to a minimum.
The state legislature recently passed a new law requiring coaches, referees and parents to keep players, of all sports, off the field after a concussion. Dr. Larry Lemak says the danger isn't in the first hit as much as it is the second. It's called "second impact syndrome", and if someone, especially a child, gets a second concussion before the first is healed it could be fatal.

Dr. Lawrence Lemak in Gardendale on Wednesday Afternoons/Gardendale Location Offers Free Osteoarthritis Screening

COMMENTARY — Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics announced recently that Dr. Lawrence Lemak will now be available to see patients on Wednesday afternoons.
Dr. Lemak is the founder of Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics. He devotes his practice to sports medicine and knee replacement and is a nationally recognized leader in his field.
Lemak will join forces with newcomer Dr. Jose Echenique to bring his experience and expertise to Gardendale.
“I am excited about the expansion to Gardendale,” said Lemak. “Our practice is heavily involved in the community, and now is the time for us to prepare for our new clinic which is opening in October.”
Lemak Sports Medicine is planning to make another big move from its temporary location on Thompson Circle to the Ambulatory Surgical Center in Gardendale at the end of October.
“The new facility will allow Lemak Sports Medicine to cater to a greater number of patients in the Gardendale and north Jefferson area,” said Matthew Lemak, chief executive officer.
“I received fellowship training under Dr. Lemak’s supervision and now have the pleasure of working alongside him. Together our expertise will better serve the needs of our patients,” Echenique added.
In addition, Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics will host a free osteoarthritis screening for the Gardendale community on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1413A Thompson Circle.
Osteoarthritis is a type of degenerative arthritis that is caused by the loss of cartilage in a joint. Symptoms may include joint pain, swelling, or stiffness. It is the most common form of arthritis, making it the number one cause of chronic disability in the United States.
Echenique will be conducting the screenings, which includes an exam and x-ray, as a complimentary service to patients suffering from joint pain or stiffness.
“Gardendale has really shown their support for our practice and this is a great way to give back to the community,” said Echenique.
